SIR Ted Nishio

Ted is a Sacramento native—he grew up here and attended Burbank High School. While in high school, Ted played outside linebacker for Burbank’s only undefeated football team, ranked #2 in the state. After high school, he joined the Air Force Reserve and served in a aeromedical evacuation unit, first at McClellan AFB and later at Travis AFB, which had the more modern jet transport airplanes.

Ted graduated from Cal Berkeley in 1972 and then earned his MSW degree from Sac State before he began work with the Alameda County Health Department, working with heroin addicts and later juvenile delinquents. After four years of that work, he wanted a change and headed to Hawaii to be a beach bum on Oahu. He enjoyed this leisure for a year before moving back to Sacramento, working for the County Mental Health Department and later the State Mental Health Department. The lower real estate prices in Sacramento enabled Ted to buy a house and later some rental properties. Faced with the possibility of job cutbacks in Mental Health, he moved to CalPersStrs and later CalPers as a real estate investment officer. Between his work at CalStrs and CalPers, he put in 15 years with these offices. He retired in 2004 at the young age of 55.

Ted has lots of hobbies and interests. He works out at the gym several days a week, belongs to a senior hiking club, participates in yoga and lap swimming, plays pickleball and ping pong, and enjoys travel (favorite destination: Machu Picchu). He has also run seven marathons, too. Ted also loves doo wop and Motown music and sports trivia games. Ted also serves as a Red Cross disaster volunteer when called. Ted and his wife Dolly have one son.

SIR Les Kurtz

Les was born in Vallejo and grew up in Sonoma. He has spent pretty much all of his life Bay area. After high school, he went to Diablo Valley College, Sac City College and briefly to Sac State. Sac State proved to be a disappointment, so he left school for a job with a computer services company. He has worked his entire career as a COBOL programmer and computer systems analyst.

Les also has been a lifelong musician, starting with the saxophone in grade school, later the guitar and now the bass. He still plays with a local group called Mischief (oldies, of course). Les is a good bowler (planning to join our league next fall), enjoys games such as backgammon, cribbage and other cards, plus he is a big NASCAR fan. Les has one daughter and three grandchildren.
